MaudeArsenault is a Canadian photographer, artist and curator who first had an international career in fashion. In 2013, with a third child on its way and a deep commitment into pursuing her interest in the field of contemporary photography she took on studies in Art History and founded online collective “The Print Atelier“.
Maude has curated many photography exhibitions and in 2019 she’s curating the international photography selection for Canada’s largest public contemporary art festival in Montréal: ART SOUTERRAIN.
As an artist and curator Maude is particularly invested in the representation of domesticity and intimacy. She is deeply interested in the notion of identity and the place of women and youth in our changing society.
After years dedicated to creating glorified images of women, she came to question her role and influence in the transmission of an idealized femininity. This questioning became even more tangible when, as her young daughter grew older, Maude could watch her become a “future” woman. Maude then decided to invest herself into a more personal approach that would document and capture puberty, teenage girls (mainly her’s) and children’s natural sense of playful eroticism. At the center of Maude’s photographic work there are young people revealing, through fictional stories distilled from reality and organized into the form of tableaux and portraits, stages and moments related to the development of their identity.
Maude’s photographs reveal the intimate universe of her subjects. By doing so, Maude is questioning the viewer’s perception and thus revealing how it is inevitably shaped and altered by our preconceived social, political and moral values.
Using the medium of photography since her beginnings, Maude has recently begun the exploration of other art forms such as video, installation, sculpture and painting. She is showing a exhibition in Montreal in March 2019 titled États Féminins en Mouvance, Essai no 1 which will be availble through The Print Atelier shortly.
Maude previously lived in Sydney and Paris but now devotes her time between the US and Canada, she has been a photographer for more then 23 years.
Her works has been published internationally in publications such as: ELLE, Vogue (Australia), Madame Figaro, Nylon, Flare, Fashion, DTK, Oyster and many more. Her work has been exhibited several times in Canada and the US since 2001 and her photographs are part of many private collections.
